Special Photo Essay:

The Art of Creating Blown Glass, Page 3

Thin threads of color which we make, can be applied to the piece as drawn lines or random linear elements. Here a torch is used to control the line application. The threads are made by heating a small amount of color and pulling it with tweezers across the room. These long threads are broken into usable length for the particular application to the piece.

Another gather is added to the piece. In many cases, we will repeat the color applications again on two or three subsequent gathers for the purpose of visual depth between the layers. Also, we usually coat the piece with two clear gathers to give a casing over the color composition.

Wet newspaper can be used to control and shape the hot glass while it is being blown out to final shape and volume. This is as close to hand forming as we can get.
